The characteristics of Jesus are the qualities that defined how He lived and treated people: compassion, humility, love, mercy, forgiveness, truth, patience, and perfect obedience to the Father. Put simply, Jesus is the clearest picture we have of what God is like and of what a human life was meant to be. Compassion: He Felt for People
One of the most visible characteristics of Jesus was His compassion. Everywhere He went, He was moved by the needs of the people in front of Him.
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Matthew 9:36 (NKJV)
Jesus never kept hurting people at arm’s length. He touched the leper, healed the sick, fed hungry crowds, and stopped for the one person everyone else walked past. At the tomb of His friend Lazarus, surrounded by grief, the Son of God wept.

The Lord of glory knelt and washed the dirty feet of His disciples, the task of the lowest servant in the house. He taught that in the kingdom of God the first would be last and the greatest would be the one who serves. The apostle Paul said our attitude should match His, the One who made Himself of no reputation and took the form of a bondservant. Being humble is not thinking poorly of yourself; it is the freedom to take the low place and serve, and no one ever modeled it like Jesus.
Love: He Laid Down His Life
At the center of everything Jesus did is love. He did not merely teach about love; He lived it and commanded His followers to do the same.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you … By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35 (NKJV)
Jesus loved the unlovable, welcomed the outcast, and showed the greatest love of all by laying down His life on the cross for people who did not deserve it.
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:13 (NKJV)
His love was not soft sentiment. It was sacrificial, costly, and aimed straight at the good of our lives. The cross is the proof of it, and that same love, the very love of God in Christ, is what He calls His people to carry into the world.
Mercy and Forgiveness: He Forgave the Worst

He forgave the woman caught in sin, ate with tax collectors, and welcomed the very people the religious crowd despised. Truth: He Never Compromised It
Jesus was completely honest and full of truth. He never lied, never flattered, and never bent the truth to please a crowd. He made a claim no one else could make.

He spoke honestly even when it cost Him, confronting hypocrisy and calling people to repentance, yet always full of the grace of God. Scripture says He committed no sin and no deceit was found in His mouth. In a world full of spin, the character of Jesus stands out as completely trustworthy, a Savior whose word you can stake your life on.
Patience, Gentleness, and Self-Control
Jesus showed remarkable patience, gentleness, and self-control. He bore with His disciples’ slow understanding, answered hostile questions calmly, and never lashed out in selfish anger. He invited the weary to come to Him and find rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 (NKJV)
When He was mocked, beaten, and crucified, He did not retaliate, though He had all the power of heaven at His command. In the garden, facing the cross, He mastered His own dread and surrendered to the plan of God. That kind of steady self-control under pressure, real strength held in check for the good of other lives, is pure strength, and it lies at the heart of who Jesus Christ is.
Obedience and Peace: Surrendered to the Father
Jesus lived in perfect obedience to His heavenly Father and carried a peace the world could not give. His whole life was surrendered to the Father’s will, even when that will led to the cross.

Out of that surrender flowed an unshakable peace. The prophet Isaiah called Him the Prince of Peace, and on the night before His death He handed that peace to His followers.

The obedience and peace of Jesus go together. Because He trusted the Father completely, He could face anything on earth without fear, fully trusting God. That same peace is His gift to everyone who follows Him, and the hope of it carries believers through the hardest days.
How to Develop the Character of Jesus
Here is the good news: the character of Jesus is not just something to admire; it is something God grows in you. The Bible calls these very qualities the fruit of the Spirit.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
You do not manufacture this fruit by gritting your teeth and trying harder. It grows as you stay close to Jesus, fed by God’s Word, shaped by prayer, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Becoming like Jesus is the lifelong work God does across the Christian life, and you were never meant to do it alone.

Abide in Him, and His likeness starts to show up in your life: more love, more joy, more peace, more patience and kindness toward the lives of the people around you. They are a portrait of the Savior and a preview of who you are becoming as you follow Him. No one will match Him perfectly this side of heaven, but in hope, just as His first disciples were, the lives of believers are being changed day by day into His likeness.
